Camera Envy and Why I Love Cons/

First of all, for the 3 people out there who AREN'T reading this blog because of Stargate, I just want to clarify that ‘cons’ means ‘conventions’, not ‘convicts’. I do not love convicts, although I am sure there are some very nice ones out there -- maybe even ones who were wrongly convicted or who feel really bad about what they did and wish they hadn’t done it. Even so, I don’t love them. I love conventions.

So…I haven’t posted in a VERY LONG TIME and I thought it would be great to do a little photo journal thingy of the sci-fi convention in London, my trip to Italy, my cats’ excitement at my return, etc. The only problem is...I don’t have a camera.

To hell with it.

I’m doin’ it anyway. So here it is:

A Virtual Photo Journal, by Someone Who Spent All Her Money on an Expensive Haircut Instead of a Camera:

1/ If I had a camera, this would be a photograph of me going through security at the airport. I would no doubt be setting off the alarm, which happens 9 out of 10 times I travel, whether I am wearing a belt or not. Of course, this photograph is illegal, but luckily it’s not a real photograph, so I can get away with it. I could even have me wearing a metal suit in the photograph, with Martha under one arm and Rufus under the other very tired arm, setting off every alarm in the building, and that would still be okay. See? Who needs a camera? THIS PHOTO IS AWESOME.

2/ The next photo would be of the other guests at the con. It would include the delightful Erin Chambers (who was on Veronica Mars, so is kind of like royalty in my books. She is also a lovely, kind person with a beautiful singing voice. And she was on Veronica Mars. Oh! Hey! She was also on Veronica Mars. I love Veronica Mars.) This photo would also include the very handsome Dan Payne, who for some bizarre reason plays a wraith on Stargate, which means that some person out there decided to put uglifying makeup and a wig on Dan Payne. I think this person should be arrested for crimes against hotmanity. Also in this photograph would be the charming Aaron Douglas (from Battlestar Galactica! Holy crap!), the hilarious David Nykl (the only ‘David’ on SGA I get along with), the lovely and talented Chuck Campbell (who should be congratulated on his stamina with cons – again, I mean stamina with conventions, not stamina with convicts...ew...), the intelligent and witty Ryan Robbins, the wild, wacky and inspiring Ivy Isenberg...and some David Hewlitt guy.

I spelled that wrong on purpose. In my first TV gig ever, my name was spelled Kate "Hewlitt" in the credits. So sad.

The photo might also possibly include me staying out until 5am with these people. Twice.

3/ This photo is a real beauty. It is a picture of all the other people I met in London: the costumed wonders, the Jedi Chefs, the “Wicked” Addict (like me), the people I chatted with at the bar, the crazy con dancers, the teddy bear and chocolate and booze and card and Cd and unicorn prism and other gift-givers who went to so much trouble to bring me nice things (although cards are easier to take home on the plane!!), the people who waited in line FOREVER for autographs and photo ops, the brave folks who asked questions at the Q&A (Q&As are still terrifying for me, by the way, unless I’m up there with my brother), my lovely assistant Sandra, all the people who volunteered their time, Bryan Superman Coney, Erin and Chuck and Ryan’s delightful significant others (Carson and Jennifer and Rebecca), etc. etc. etc. This photo would suck if it actually existed, because everyone’s head would be the size of a dust mote. See? No need for a camera when you have imaginaaaaaaation.

4/ This non-existent photo is of my mother’s appendix, which burst while David and Jane and I were in Italy. This is a gross photo. Be glad that I don’t have a camera.

(She is a million times better now, which is why I’m allowed to make appendix jokes.)

My mum is the coolest woman on the planet, by the way. She is beautiful and smart and funny and living in Italy all by herself (thus brave) and a wonderful, sisterlike mum. (Sister as in ‘sister’, not as in ‘nun’. My mother is not a nun.) I miss her. Mum, if you’re reading this…can I borrow some money to buy a camera?

5/ This is a photo of a camera. I want one.

6/ This is a photo of 'M', catsitter extraordinaire, drowning in cat hair while I was away. It WOULD also be a photo of my cats, Rufus and Martha, in which they look incredibly adorable (though 50% obese – I’m not saying which 50%). However, I am not allowed to talk about my cats anymore because my friend Chris (the one who can’t pack – yes, I mean you, Chris) thinks I talk about cats too much in this blog. My other friend Chris thinks that I have toxoplasmosis from cat litter and that it's affecting my brain. I figure that the only way to prove to the Chrises that I do not have toxoplasmosis is to stop reminding them that I have cats. (Cats? What cats?) I'm also going to stop being neurotic, negative and reckless (all signs of toxoplasmosis. I just looked it up on Wikipedia.)

7/ This is a photo of me NOT having toxoplasmosis. Notice how happy and optimistic and restrained I am. And no cats in sight...

Okay. I am done with the fake photos.

To summarize: the convention was so much fun and I hope I can go to lots more (like the one in Germany? Australia?); I met cool actors (some of whom were in Veronica Mars and Battlestar Awesomelactica); I met fantastic fans; I went to Italy and got to know the Lucchese hospital intimately; I came home and saw my cats who I won’t talk about anymore so that my “friends” stop thinking I have “toxoplasmosis”.

Have a happy Sunday, everybody!

K.

That's probably the best slide show I've ever seen! *g*

It was great seeing you there and I'm glad you had fun (hopefully enought to do it again:)

Glad you're back home safe and sound and that your mom's doing all right as well.

And also, your friends obviously don't realize that we are cat people out here, and if David can talk about Mars as much as he does (which is okay because we're dog people too) then you can certainly talk about your cats.

who is this Chris? he can't just say you talking too much about cats! not if the cat is Rufus, then you can't talk too much about cats. *hmpf*

Anyway, Cons are so cool!
And hey maybe you can go to a con one day where Jaime Ray Newman is on, so you meet another Stargate/Veronica Mars actress ;) She is so great in there.. and why aren't you in Veronica Mars?

And I love you pictures! about the bleeping.. well at least you don't take a miniture swiss army knive with you when you KNOW that it will bleep and you can't take it with you ... twice!
See you can't beat my mother ;)

What fantastic photos! It sounds like you had a great time at the con, and I'm glad your mom is better!

Toxoplasmosis can be used to your benefit. They (being "medical-type people") do not recommend that women of childbearing age clean out catboxes due to toxoplasmosis concerns, so I make my husband do it. Maybe you could get M to do it for you under the same auspices... ;-)

Hysterical post - I agree that the picture of you in the metal suit, cat under each arm, setting off every alarm in the airport, is the best picture ever.

Ooooh, the pictures are really lovely! Your camera sure makes some very nice and quality photos!

Other than that, it was very nice meeting you at the Con. You did a great job up there on the stage! And I hope you will come to Germany for the Crossroads Con! I would love to meet you there!

It was my first con, too, and I have to say you guys made it a hell of a fun expirience I would not want to miss. Ever.

Thank you very much for that :)

Great photojournalism! You should consider a career change or a part time job.

Seriously though, I especially enjoyed the first one. I got this great mental image of a cyberman carting Martha over a shoulder through security in my local airport. You were never in my local airport, but then there was no real photo so I can pretty much picture whatever I want to.

Oh, and thanks for clarifying the "con". I do watch Stargate, however I live within 10 miles of a maximum security facility so whenever someone says "con" I instantly picture The State Penn . So have fun with cons!

Hey kate - love your pics *grin*! Here are some actual pictures tho, none of airport security, or of English customs agents grilling us as to why my friend and I were returning on different days.

Anyway, It seems like you really enjoyed every bit of your time out. It's nice to have you back too, and about the cats, there's no such thing as "talking too much" about them.

Bye

P.S:Really, even the appendix one is awesome in an artistic way. You should get some award for all those photos!!!

I think from now on we should all take virtual photos. :D
Great that you had such a fantastic time at Pegasus 2, I feel so sad that I couldn't be there. I find it really cool that you're thinking about doing other conventions!! We have one here in Ghent (Belgium) called FACTS *HINT HINT*!! All scifi :D
What's wrong with talking about cats?? I have one called 'Poessie' and I talk about her all the time *giving Kate moral support to stand up and defend 'the cats'*!!
To end this comment * which has become longer than I expected*, I LOVE Veronica Mars!! I've seen every episode like 3/4 times. Veronica rocks!! So do you btw :D
Thanks for posting again, and maybe I'll meet you at an other convention!!

And you take such omgamazing pictures!

Kate - please keep talking about your cats, it makes me feel less self-conscious when I talk about my cat all the time.

As for airport security, you should try travelling with my family. I'm the only normal one - so that definitely tells you something. My Dad has artificial legs that have quite a bit of metal in them - and so that causes the scanners to have a nervous breakdown. And my sister has a pacemaker that can react strangely to scanners - and since she is younger than most people with pacemakers, she gets funny looks when she tells people she has one.

Glad you had a great time in Europe - I didn't make it to this con, but I've quite a few friends who were there and they all had a wonderful time.

Sounds like you had lots of fun at the con - but then that is what they are for. To have fun. It's good that the actors seem to have as much fun as the fans.

It was great seeing you and hearing some of the stories on set (of both SGA and ADB) and growing up with your brother...

And you can talk about whatever you want...This is your blog after all...

And it would be even more fantastic if you would actually come to the Crossroads convention in Germany!! (Plus it's also a BSG con, yo you would meet lots of other awesome BSG actors ;))

Great pics, btw *g* And don't be afraid, your Chrises obviously don't know that healthy people with a working immunesystem usually don't get toxoplasmosis, even if they own wonderful cats :)

As one of the people at the con (convention cause I'm not a convict), please can I say many thanks for going and being a great guest. ::waving to Kate's mom:: Glad to hear you're feeling better. This was not a trip for digestive tracts, apparently.

Hopefully everyone in the family is back to full health now. Although, apparently, the toxoplasmosis is still affecting Kate. :)

Glad you had such a great time. I will put in a not-so-subtle suggestion that Dragon*Con (in Atlanta) would allow you to meet TONS of great actors in cool shows because it's so friggin' HUGE. So you totally want to visit that con (as in convention, not convict).

Keep us updated on the kitties. And I join you in the Overweight Pet Hall of Shame. My dog was placed on a diet by her vet, last week. ::bad mommy::

Hi Kate.

I'm so glad you had fun at the con. Definately like your virtual pics, the best things is that they are always clear images with no lighting or focus problems.

Glad to hear your mom is better! That is good to hear.

I have to agree with Paula, Dragon*Con isgoing to have several people who post regularly (both here and on David's site) going this year and I think you would enjoy it. There are requests to bring "A Dog's Breakfast" there as they have an indie film festival too. And Chris Judge is a guest of the con already. If it's possible, you really should join us there.

Glad your mom is doing well. Appendicitis can be very bad. I had mine burst when I was eight. Definitely one of the most painful experiences of my life.

I'm glad your mother is okay now!

also, this toxoplasmosis thingy sounds icky... [looks it up on wikipedia] oooh, a parasite. a friend of mine researchers parasites. i'm sure he'll tell me all about this when i let him know you don't have it and have the fake photos to prove it.

talk about your cats all you want, dear. I talk about mine and my dog all the time. it's perfectly normal. :D

Thanks for your always amusing observations. You should really be a writer. Oh, wait, you *are* a writer!

Love your photos. Amazing how clear and well lit they are. It's always hard for us little people (the ones who are general admission) to get decent photos from the back of the room. Thanks for sharing yours. Wish I was there.

I'm sure if you had mentioned at Peg2 your lack of a camera, someone would have popped out and bought you one of those disposable ones for you. Nothing like having your own personal photos to bring back a memory. This cons are so jam packed and we all tend to stay up way too late to remember it all.

David Nykl wrote about the convention, you've written about the convention, but your brother has yet to tell us anything from his side, probably because he's busy geeking out coding his site and his new myspace page. I want to see some videos from that new HD camcorder.

Sorry to hear about your mum and glad she's ok.

I didn't get any photos either, having a camera but a distinctly bad one only used to take closeups of my costume (Ronon, looking very like a cavalier - man I feel silly looking at them but twas fun at the time). But yeah, virtual photos, lol, nice creative touch and more amusing to read. :D

Your mum does indeed sound very cool, and eek to appendicitus - a secret fear of mine because it's just so random! - but very glad she's okay now.

And can you really talk too much about cats? I enjoy hearing about other people's since I'm not allowed any in my flat. Having cats vicariously through friends and bloggers is all I got so don't stop talking about them entirely. ;)

If I didn't already find your blog ridiculously funny, this:

"I think this person should be arrested for crimes against hotmanity."

would be enough to make me an addict.

So sorry about your mum, but I'm glad you guys were there for her. And I thought only pregnant women had to worry about toxoplasmosis? That's how my friend Amy got her husband to clean the litterbox, anyway.

Finally, come to Dragon*Con! And ComicCon!

Hi Kate!

Great to read that you are back in Canada. We met briefly at a "con" in London and I was the odd "gay man" that you spoke to... well, kind of!

I'm still on holiday, having made my way through Europe after visiting London and hanging out there with my sister and other friends. I am currently in Asia, enjoying the last week of my holiday and spending a lot of money on a lot of stuff that I suddenly need.

Take care and have fun!

Keep us entertained, Hewlett!!!

Hey Kate, we're trying to drive your brother mad in his forum, by creating a "Rufus and Martha appreciation shrine" thread! *LOL*

That'll show him he's not the only one to have a fan-acclaimed pet! *ROFL*

I never thought I'd say this, but after reading your hilarious report, I want to go to a con!
I'm glad you had such a good time and that your mother is better now.
If the camera-fairy brings you a camera, tell him/her/it to make sure it's at least 5.1 megapixels, for better quality incriminating photos!

Your photos are awesome, much better than mine. The only one that came out well is of me being strangled by a robot (ok, that's not a normal thing to be writing about. Not for me anyway.)

Also in the category of awesome: your blog. Thanks muchly for comming to the con and being... awesome. (I need a new word - stat!.. Nope, sorry. It's too late for synonyms, that'll have to do for now)

"hotmanity" hehehe - true.

So glad you had a wonderful time--tell us more about Noble Parasites! I'd love to see it here in New York! (hint hint)

Hey Kate -

If you want to come to St. Louis for NASFIC (http://www.stlf.org/archon) this year, you're more than welcome to! :) Just a word of warning - it will be hot and humid here that weekend, since it will be August and August in St. Louis is always hot. :-p

Next year, Archon's supposed to move back to end of September/beginning of October and the weather tends to be much milder here that time of year.

Or, go to San Diego Comic Con in July - that's usually a fun show. I finally made it out this past year and had a blast. (http://www.comic-con.org/)

I will gladly buy you a dinner or two if you make it to one of those events. :)

Now, coming up in April will be Midsouth Con at the Memphis Holiday Inn at the Airport on Democrat & International Airways Blvd. It's a smallish con, but we have a great con suite and I tend to rule as the Beer Wench, so if you want a specific brand of beer, I can pass word along to the PTBs and make sure we have it in stock. (The Con Com takes very good care of their guests! Go take a look at their site at: http://www.midsouthcon.org - Terry Pratchett is the author Guest of Honor and he's a fun person!)

I won't recommend the Creation Chicago con in August because the hotel just sucks really, really badly. The Wyndham O'Hare is no longer friendly to folks if you're not Arabic or Isreali. Bad, bad hotel! (It's really too bad that another convention I attend - WindyCon will be returning there in November.)

Hey Kate,

'Tis Vicky, Dan's mate from the convention. There were indeed some very late nights. I finally said goodbye to Aaron and Dan at around 3am on that Sunday night/Monday morning and went back to my hotel, only to get up again at 6am to get back to Bristol. Heheh. :)

Glad you had a good time, nice to meet you even if it was all too briefly.

And darn-it that we didn't get onto the subject of 'Wicked' while we were there - I love that musical. I find it impossible to listen to 'Defying Gravity' without singing very loudly (and badly) and crying. Heheh.

Cheers
Vicky

Talk about being late to the party. It's probably not worth posting anymore except I just had to say that was hysterical. I believe liquids actually shot out of my nose from laughing too hard.
Damn! There goes another keyboard!

Loved the virtual photos. Waaaay better than the real thing.

Thanks for the laugh!

Hello! I'm new to your blog--one of those crazed Stargate fans, actually. I just wanted to say that I loved your virtual pics! They were beautiful. Also, a cat owner can never talk too much about their pets. I love cats. Sadly, I don't own one right now, but someday...

Much success to you and I look forward to future posts!

I'm so glad you went to a con, and I hope you do more! I just came back from the Stargate Con in Vancouver, which featured your brother and Jane, but unfortunately not you. *sniff*

At one point on stage when he mentioned your name, the audience went wild. And David said (sounding *more* than a little jealous) "What!? You're KATE fans?" And we all cheered like a bunch of crazies.

I also went to the screening of "A Dog's Breakfast" and you were fantastic! Hope to see a lot more of you in the future.
