I'm Officially a Twit /

Ohhhh dear. I have just discovered Twitter. It's perfect: low commitment, low stress, high fun, an absolute time-waster. JUST what my new Vancouver life needed. How ever will I fit it into my busy schedule?
Hmmmm. Let's have a look:

8a.m. Think about waking up. Listen to alarm for thirty guilt-ridden seconds before turning it off and going back to sleep.
10a.m. Wake up again because cats are angry and have started knocking things made of glass off random counter tops.
10:30a.m. Go for "long" walk, get distracted by coffee shop, drink coffee, cut walk short.
11a.m.-8:30p.m. Procrastinate, eat, check email every thirty seven seconds to see if anything exciting has happened. It hasn't. Reload page several times to make sure I'm not missing anything. I'm not.
8:30p.m. Wonder why Canadian Idol can't be on EVERY night.
8:31p.m. Feel guilty about watching reality television -- or thinking about watching reality television -- when it represents the downfall of my profession.
8:32pm Eat unnecessary snack involving salt.
9p.m. Think about writing, decide against it, surf the internet, e-stalk people, check email, drink water (because of the salt -- it's a vicious cycle), eventually go to bed.

How EVER will I find the time for Twitter?

The way I discovered it is a bit embarrassing: I was googling MY OWN BROTHER to find out about A Dog's Breakfast this weekend at Comicon. (ComiCon? Where do the capitals go?) and I found his Twitter page. I'm not totally sure what it is, but I've joined. Whenever I see a little box that says "Join" next to it, I just have to. (It's like when someone offers you a drink you've never heard of: just blindly accept. Would I like a "bellini"? Yes please. A "mojito"? Why the heck not.) I would give my right arm (that's not true) to go to ComiCon/comicon/CoMiCoN for the screening, especially since VERONICA FRICKIN' MARS is going to be there. I don't think it's going to happen, but I'm working on it...

...which leads me to my next topic for all you Stargoids (I've run out of names for you. That one sounds a bit like a disease.) Here is my question: I would love to go to some conventions over the summer/fall, but I don't know how to go about doing that. I didn't write that in the form of a question. Damn it. I'll try again: How do I shamelessly get myself invited to another convention? (Or is it like birthday parties in gr. 6, where there's just no hope unless I stop carrying all my belongings in Biway bags and listening to Heart.) I LOVE to travel. I LOVE to meet new people. I had a total blast in London (and in Burbank, even though I was only a pseudo-guest.) And I finally have a roommate who can catsit for me. (Martha likes him better than me. It's because he pretends to punch her. Who knew that cartoon punching noises would win her little furry heart?)

So that's it. I guess I'll go to bed now (or check my email or update my twitter page or eat salt straight from the shaker.)

'Night!

K.

Kate!

I wanted to suggest you come to DragonCon in Atlanta, Ga this year. I went to look up the guest application to link you to it and it said the deadline for new guests had passed! Oh no! It's the only convention I go to and I'd love to meet you! Perhaps you could think about attending next year? It's a hell of a lot of fun.

Oh my god kate you had me gigglesnorting my fruit twist drink you are so funny. Cats are odd critters who would have thought my cat would like my sweaty sports shoes over catnip, strange but true!

As for conventions??? Not been to any. I must do that, maybe if I get the Job I just applied for (Prays for the bazillionth time, see its my dream company)

Glad you are liking Vancouver though, it is always good to enjoy your town!

Hee! Well, you should definitely come to London Film and Comic Convention if you're free the first weekend in September. Torri's going to be there, so you won't be alone, and you could go see Wicked on the Saturday night as well! Doesn't that sound tempting? *g*

If you go to the site- http://londonfilmandcomiccon.com - there should be some information to let you know how to get in touch with the organisers. I'm pretty sure there is...

Also, oooh, Twitter... I think I'll check that out... damn... I really need to get on with some site work and not procrastinate like this... you're a bad influence, darlin'!

Yay! Another Hewlett on Twitter! Seriously, how did you not know about your brother's Twitter account? We've all been e-stalking him for months now (he makes it very easy, bless his geeky little heart).

Two things you should be aware of - 1. Double check how much you're charged for incoming text messages if you're having Twitter notifications sent to your cell phone. You could go broke just subscribing to David's updates, I swear. 2. Twitter can be addictive.

Ahh that's awesome! Wish I could go to comiccon! Good luck restraining from Twitter... I hear it's very addictive :P

Oh, Kate. Don't give in to the reality show genre! ::sigh::

As for cons? I'm sure that David probably just gets invites out of the blue, but does he have someone besides his agent who manages those things for him? Maybe they could put the word out that you're interested.

And I don't mean this in an attempt to start a flame war, but avoid Julie Caitlin Brown; who does just this kind of thing for actors. She has caused some ugly feelings out there.

I could have Marcia Patterson, who runs the Stargate track at DragonCon, get in touch with you about next year. It's a really fun convention!

Argh! You are too funny...

At first I thought, "I want her life!" But when I think about it... apart from all the reading I have to do (and I'm sure you do your fair share of research) and the occasional lecture I have to drag myself along to it's actually very similar. Yay!

Although 4am baking did replace late night salty snacks for a while there.

If you came to New Zealand for the Armageddon con, I would ask lots of really well thought out and interesting questions. Promise. Apart from Ellen Muth from Dead Like Me, the guest lineup looks a bit sad this year... Wrestlers. Sigh. Why would geeks be interested in wrestlers? And after having a brilliant time with Don S Davis, John Rhys Davies and Aaron Douglas in Wellington.

Er... I mean, there are lots of awesome guests and I'm sure you would have tonnes of fun. I'm not selling it very well, am I? Oh look, trees. Trees and sheep.

I have nooo idea how you can get invited. Just show up there and say "Surpriiiise" ?

I'd try that.

Or you could write WolfEvents an email that you loved the Pegasus 2 Convention and would like to go to the CROSSROADS *cough* and other conventions, too. I think they'd be thrilled to have you again.

We'd love to have you at Dragon*Con in Atlanta, GA (August 31-Sept 3!) I'm trying to get an official screening of the film but I don't know if it will work out. We've got Paul and Chris as guests already and you would be icing on the cake! (Did I mention the icing is the best part? And that I'm a huge suck-up?)

If you're interested, drop an email to the track coordinator at stargatefandom@yahoo.com (or me at fia@blue-jello.com) and I bet we could still get something set up, regardless of deadlines. I know they continue to add guests right up until the last minute.

Ah, yes, Twitter - totally a time suck! (and fun...)

If you want to peek into other people's twits (or does that make *me* one?) - I'm chickwriter on Twitter.

RE: cons - tough call - I know mystery cons and fantasy cons but not so much the SF ones in particular. I think a lot of difference is in the invite - I get "invited" to some as an author - which basically means I don't have to pay the con fee, but still have to pay for my travel/hotel, etc. Other times it's just - feel free to come, we'll see if we can get you on something, but hey, pay up first.

It's probably different for you. ::g::

A great convention resource can be found here: http://www.locusmag.com/Conventions.html

Locus is an industry (SF/F) magazine and has a great online listing. I noticed it's a wee bit out of date, but still quite helpful.

And another one bites the Twitter dust.

If you're looking for a con to visit, might I suggest Chicago? It's a beautiful, friendly, reasonably-priced city, and sadly, there is a derth of interesting guests at most of our cons.

And love to the Biway bags and Heart. What's your favourite Heart song?

Hi, Kate,

It really depends on the type of convention. The fan-run ones, the best way to be put on program is to contact the head of programming and ask. It's really that simple sometimes. There are area science fiction conventions all over the US, during all different times of the year.

The professionally run ones (by companies such as Creation) are harder to get onto programming with. I wouldn't even be able to tell you where to start with those, alas.

I have a brother who is the fountain of all knowledge. If I need to find out something I just ask him - saves me having to do any thinking.

I am sure your much older brother David will get you invited to a convention, of Mars' Uncle Paul.

I get on really well with my brother - he lives in England and I live in Scotland!

I am glad that you have a reliable cat-sitter. My two moronic felines (Frankie and Princess Merlin) spend most of their time beating the crap of each other - they are, of course, siblings.

Wanna go to conventions? Well, there's one in Richmond the first weekend of August. (Ok, Richmond isn't exactly "travelling"...) It's actually a fan gathering, but other guests will be coming and it will be fun. Other than that, just let people know. I know we all LOVED you in London and would LOVE you to come to another Wolf con!
Just let the fans know, and we'll work on it.

Couple of Conventions in the UK:

Wolf: SG-12 (2nd - 4th Nov) - Theme: SG1
Wolf: P3 (Don't know dates) - Theme: Atlantis

Both are organised by Wolf Events (www.wolfevents.com) or e-mail: wolfevents@aol.com

As for twitter, it is very addictive. Have you tried FaceBook (www.facebook.com)? That's even worse - whole weeks can go by on there without you noticing!

I wish I could go to ComicCon too

That actually seems to work for Aaron Douglass and the Pegasus conventions. If he doesn't "gate" crash P3, I'll be rather surprised. Anyway, I don't have much to add on the "how to get invited to a convention" front as I've no idea. As for suggested cons....

Dragon Con is fun, HUGE, but fun. If you're allowed to roam the halls, you're likely to come across squads of Stormtroopers, Klingons, Starfleet officers and so on.

I know we'd love to have you back at Pegasus 3. I'm fairly sure the guest list is still wide open as they've only announced McGillion as attending so far.

Shore Leave in Baltimore is already over. My friends tell me that's a good con. I wouldn't know personally since I haven't been, which is kind of inexcusable since I lived about 2 hours from it for 9 years. *face|palm"

Also, welcome to Twitter. :D

hee, sounds like your days are a bit like mine at the moment, at least while I'm still job hunting. Instead of being woken by my cats, my husband calls me every morning anywhere between 5:00 and 7:30. Then the cats think it's time to be fed and will walk all over me until I get up. Of course then I get back in bed. :D

Welcome to twitter! I don't post too much myself, but I love to read what everyone else is doing. There are a couple of people on there who are so funny they make my day. :)

I'll add in my 2 cents and say try to get in to Dragon*Con! I have tickets, but sadly am not going to be able to attend. :( I know a lot of other fans who will be there and would love to meet you!

Kate,

OMG we would LOVE to have you be at DragonCon!!!! Who cares if the guest deadline has passed...Tahmoh Penikett of Battlestar Galactica fame just showed up last year so you could SO do it this year!!! We could EASILY find you crash space (I have 2 rooms at one of the con hotels this year) and I know we could find some fans who'd be willing to chip in for your airfare.

Kate, seriously, we would be thrilled and honored to have you attend DragonCon. I mean the convention itself is an absolute BLAST!! It's August 31-September 3rd down in Atlanta, GA and the website if you wanna check it out is http://www.dragoncon.org. If there is ANYTHING I can do to help out, please feel free to email me at lyndasty@gmail.com. I'm a staff member for the Stargate Offworld Fandom Track which is a fancy way of saying that I work with the Stargate programming track and am in charge of our track room at the convention.

And yes Twitter is ADDICTING! But it's so much fun!

Anyway, hope to hear from you and hoping even more to be able to meet you at DragonCon!!

Oh boy, another person to follow on Twitter. Just what I don't need. :-)

As for the cons...
Shore Leave- outside of Baltimore Maryland is a great con...the only "problem" is that in July so it will another year until the next one...But it a lot of fun. I don't know how much you have contact with the actors on Stargate but you could ask Amanda , Chris or Paul about Shore Leave . It looked like they had lots of fun. And then there is always Ten-Forward if you want to party.

Farpoint, also just outside of Baltimore (in fact in the same hotel) is also a good con. http://www.bcpl.net/~wilsonr/
The major concern with that con is the chance of getting stuck in the hotel if there is one occasional Maryland snow storms.

I am not sure how you would get in contact with them, but you could just email them and let them know you are interested.

Haven't left greetings and a comment in your blog forever, thought I could drop by again and say hello. :)

You're on twitter now, too! So cool! I just friended you there. I still don't really know how that site works, but it's addictive, that I learnt already...

Hehe, you googled your own brother? Geek. ;) You two might be more alike than you might want to admit. :D

Haven't seen ADB yet, I wait for the DVD that will come out in September. Will be the last human on Earth who hasn't seen that film by then, I think. :D

You want to go to another con? Call or write to WolfEvents and say that you're interested in attending the Crossroads con in Germany in November (David Nykl will be there)! *g*
I'd love to meet you again. In fact I already bought a little present for you already. Sounds weird, I know. But I just went past it one day, shortly after the Pegasus 2 con, and I just thought "this is perfect for Kate Hewlett". So I just bought it. Just in case I might meet you again one day. And then I asked myself if I'd gone nuts. Must have been the post-con-confusion. Normally I'm not that weird. ;)

I love the way you described a day in your life. Funny! And that's so me. During the week I have to go to work and in the evening I'm just beat, and on the weekend, when I finally have the chance to do something useful or just catch up with some things like writing emails to friends, I usually end up being to busy doing... nothing.
The days are too short, that's the problem. Although, knowing me, if the day had 6 more hours I'd probably waste these too. :S

Hope you have a lovely time in Vancouver! :)

All the best,
A.

Hi Kate,

nice day. ;o) With cats it is such a thing. Our cat (Phil, ...you know) has decided that I am her personal "attendant".
For example it doesn't matter what time it is, I have to open her my door or window and let her go in our out.
But what should I make? I love her and she is only a human bei... pet. :o)

What You can make to be invited on Conventions?
Because I'm not a star I don't really know.
Maybe there is a solution to organize a little event in Germany for you.
Nevertheless, although the G7-Con is dead, we have a great Con-scenery in Germany. It's no problem to give you some addresses and links.

Mail to me or I will send you (to one of your mail addresses you don't often check) some informations, soon.

Greetings from Germany

You didn't know David was on Twitter? We've been privy to his twitterings for ages. It's like mini-blogging and a good way to note the little things that happen in your life. You can twitter from your computer, or twitter from your phone. Just be sure you know how much your text messaging costs, though.

Another vote for DragonCon here. Ask Paul McGillion about it. He's making his 2nd visit to this Atlanta fan run convention in Aug/Sept (Labor Day weekend here in the States). Brandy Ledford, from the show Andromeda (and who was in the movie Icemen with David, but that's beside the point), was a guest star on Atlantis and sat in on the Stargate panels. You've made more than one guest appearance on Atlantis, so you're more than qualified to join in.

Ask Paul about the fan run convention Shore Leave, too, He was just there, flying in on the red-eye after a day of filming on Friday and flying back home on Sunday to go back to work early Monday. What a guy! Shore Leave occurs the first weekend after the Fourth of July. A friend had A Dog's Breakfast there and you're great in the movie. Ha, you actually smacked David on the forehead! And you wore some great clothes. I can't wait for the DVD in Sept.

Those of us on the Mid-Atlantic are deprived of Hewletts. We never get convention visits from either of you. Can't wait for your NYC run in November.

TWITTER HELP - When people follow you they get your updates.

When you follow them you get their updates.

When you follow each other you can carry conversation back and forth and send direct messages to each other.
None of that is explained very well on Twitter.

Kate I am in Twitter as Fran AKA
(nanook 660)

I think you need to find someone to Friend/Follow and then Friend/Follow them and that should set you on the right path.

Come and Friend/Follow me. Or latch onto your brother Mr. 1000+ Friends already dhewlett. And eventually he will start following you. DH never told you about Twitter?

It takes a bit of getting used to.

I wholeheartedly Nth your attempting to attend DragonCon in Atlanta! Mostly because it's an awesome Con (and no-small-partly because it's the only one I can attend :P), and Atlanta has a lot of stuff to do when you're not Conning.

I have also added you to my Twitter (I'm equuzombie there, not like it matters or anything) because I'm annoying like that. ;)

A lot of people on the F.A.C.T.S. board

http://factscon.proboards20.com/

seem to be very fond of you.

Maybe it's a good idea contacting the F.A.C.T.S. managment

http://www.facts-convention.com/fa_contact.html

http://www.facts-convention.com/fa_index.html

and get to spend some time in Belgium (yes, Europe) this october.

The crowd there is great - polite and very enthusiastic.

Never heard of the FACTS convention? Shame. Lots of people from all over Europe travel hundreds of miles because of it.

You are too, too amusing! I love occasionally wandering by and reading your musings.

And it's fabulous to find a cat person among all the dog-obsessive actors out there.

Big purrs to your cat from mine!

Oh, you should definitely come to Aus. I think there are a couple of conventions a year.

There's supposed to be one with Joe Flanigan coming up, but I think it's been rescheduled....

Definitely get yourself on the list! You need to come and see this great country! And make sure you get enough time to travel around a bit.

Hey Kate -

There's WindyCon in Chicago at the Wyndham O'Hare. That's Nov. 9-11, this year. You can contact them at: http://windycon.org/contact.html

It's a fun show, even if the hotel desk staff is just downright rude these days. Too bad that the Creation SG Con is going to be there w/ Paul in August, otherwise, I'd be there in a heartbeat. :)

Besides, if you go to Windy, you can get a free 10 min massage from one of the students of the massage school there in Chicago, or like an hour long one from one of the licensed therapists (myself included!) that will be there. :)

You can contact the Windy Con folks at: http://windycon.org/contact.html

There are more shows in the southern US in the winter, mostly because of the nicer weather. But, seeing as how I haven't done much road tripping the last few years, I can't name them. :)

Next spring there is Mid South Con in Memphis - http://www.midsouthcon.org/pages/contact.html. I know like most of the folks on Con Com and I like live in con Suite hustling beverages and food out for the Starving Masses that attend the show. Absolutely awesome con suite and we take care of our guests! If there's a special beverage you want, we'll have it in stock for you!

Then, back in my hometown, there's Show-Me-Con/anime St. Louis like next April.... the website sucks, but you can email the con chair, Mike Hatley - Kingpn1@aol.com and tell him you want to come and I bet he'd be tripping over his feet to have you come. :)

Archon, which is normally a fall event is this weekend for NASFIC (the wanna-be world con), so skip it this year. Next year would be totally awesome for you to come, since the current GoH is Laurell K. Hamilton and I have no interest in seeing her at Archon! :p (Crappy writer - really, crappy local writer who's turned St. Louis into a "Sex haven of fic" as one friend said, and she is such a huge drahma llama - just go read her blog. :p)

http://www.archonstl.org/32/index.html - the con chair is like Rich Zellich, and you can email him at rich@zellich.net and tell him you want to come.

And, if you come to Archon next fall, it won't be so damn hot to do the hike between the Holiday Inn, down to the Collinsville convention center, over to any of the restaurants that are in walking distance on the main strip there in front of the center.

Besides, there's lots of awesome stuff to come see in St. Louis! :)

You must be obsessed with moving to look at moving almost all the way back across the country.

See, you should stay in Vancouver to continue to harass Brother Dearest and help your sisters plot revenge on him for all the times he's wound their kids up at bedtime now that he's going to be a parent himself. *eg* (Quite scary, isn't it? :-p)

You should see about talking to the organizers for Mid-Ohio Con in Columbus. It's a small show in late November, but I'm sure they'd love to have you.

Hey Kate

I am late to the party and have only just seen your query about getting an invite to a convention.

I don't know if you are really interested or not, but if you are?

VCon ( http://www.vcon.ca/ )takes place here, in Vancouver, on October 19-21. I am quite certain that the concom would be most happy to extend you an official invitation to attend if you were so inclined.

I run the filking at VCon, and have been involved with the convention for a number of years. If you truly would like to attend, please let me know.

Feel free to send any queries to filkchair.vcon@gmail.com

I can second the recommendation to do VCon. They have a great convention, with lots of excellent people, and you'll have a great time.

Also, I was chair of Calgary's convention this past year, so if coming to a 400-person convention in Calgary interests you, would you send me a note at kirstin.morrell@csffs.org and let me know if you've got an appearance fee? Thanks.

I'll see if I can get you invited to StarFest. That's in Denver in April. It would be AWESOME if you'd come.
