Phark This/
I decided to put up a photo of all the roomies, but it just isn't working. I'm sure it's the computer's fault. Yeah. Nothing to do with me. I'm a technological wizard -- a genius, if you will...except that I've only "chatted" twice in my life, I've never "texted" anyone, and I can't figure out garage band. I can record me singing and playing guitar (poorly) but that's where it ends, folks.
I will get my technological superior (no, not David -- he's all talk, except for that whole "creating his own web-design company" thing) to upload the photo, because it's pretty funny. It's mostly funny because my cat is obese. It's true. I don't know how to help him. If I try to play a game with him, he bats at the toy lamely with an unenthusiastic paw, but won't actually stand up, let alone run. Do they make those hamster wheels for cats? Probably not. Too bad. Although he'd just use it as a bed anyway.
Instead of a photograph, I will talk about my fantastic roomies instead and let you know what they're up to. A word is worth a thousand pictures, in my humble opinion, but I'll change that opinion as soon as I can get the frickin' photo to work.
So...my roommates: P, H, A, R and me (K). PHARK? Our initials spell PHARK. That's gotta mean something. (PHARK: The chemical reaction that occurs when you mix too many artists together and force them to live in one loft.)
P is an absolute delight -- a friend from high school days who I've acted with many many times, and for whom I wrote "Humans Anonymous", the play I produced in July. He's a gifted performer, a handsome dude, he cooks, he cleans...and he's British. And he's not gay, like his character in 'Humans' was. (Nor is he single.)
A is going to be famous one day...maybe one day soon. He will be starring in "The Graduate" opposite Sonja Smits this fall at the Grand Theatre in London, Ontario, as well as heating up the screen in "Warriors of Terra", which has the best trailer of any Canadian film I've ever seen. (Uh...I haven't seen the trailer for "A Dog's Breakfast" yet.)
H is a weird and wonderful writer who I met at the National Theatre School. His plays are dark, funny, moving and smart. He also happens to be a good actor. Lucky jerk. For some reason, my angry and obese cat is terrified of him -- possibly because H wrote a screenplay about poisoning his female roommate's angry and obese cat. (He's a pretty smart cat and I don't think he liked the subject matter. It's just a theory, though.)
R (for Rufus -- I named him after Rufus Wainwright) was abandoned (and declawed -- bad bad bad) by his previous owners when he was just two years old. Luckily, he was rescued from a high-kill shelter and put into a foster home, which is where I found him. He is the most badly-behaved cat I have ever owned. He's also adorable, so he gets away with it. He is orange and white with big green eyes and some stomach problems. And last night he ran headfirst into a wall.
And then there's me, the K in PHARK. I am an actor and a writer, taking a break after a crazy busy summer and procrastinating with my new blog before embarking on my next writing project, which is called "Use My Babies Well". Rufus and I are pretty happy with our lives right now. He eats as much as he can, as do I, and he sleeps a whole lot. I haven't been sleeping so well because my neighbour has a television built into the wall, but I don't mind. I love where I live, I love my roommates, I love this crazy neighborhood (which has the best coffee shop in Toronto -- I'm not kidding). I'm a happy Hewlett.
Speaking of Hewletts...thanks to all the Stargatites (did I just make up that word?) for their excitement about "McKay and Mrs. Miller". The episode was a total blast to film, and David was amazing to work with. (Sometimes. When he wasn't speaking. Or hitting. Or acting. Or eating.) This is the most idiotic question ever, but I have never had cable before, so I've had to watch episodes of Atlantis on dvd. Is there any way to watch Atlantis on t.v. here in Toronto?
Bye for now...keep checking in for that photograph I promised!

Hi Kate,
PHARK, I like that word, especially since it rhymes with snark ;)
It sounds like you have great roommates and cat.
I'd love to see a picture of him too.
I've got 2 myself. I went to visit friends in Montreal. Their cats had kittens and I took one home with me (to the Netherlands). And that's whats happened the next time I went to visite them too.
Is the trailer for Warriors of Terra onlne somewhere?
And you haven't seen the trailer for A Dog's Breakfast yet?
you'll probably know where it is, but I'll spam it anyway:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpUJLMnr2NE
I don't know if you made up the word Stargatites, but it's a good word :)
I wish I could tell you if there is a way to watch Atlantis in Toronto, but since I live in the Netherlands I can't help you with that.
But I'm sure someone will know the answer.
I'll look forward to reading more of your posts.
Greetings,
Chantal
Well... where I live there's no SGA on tv at all, and they've only just recently released the first season on dvd, so the only way to be up to date is by, yeah, downloading it, hooking the tv to the computer and watch it. This way I'm only always only one day behind on schedule.
I honestly buy the dvd's once they're out!!
Otherwise these guys broadcast SGA, but it looks like they're a couple of months behind. As far as I can tell they'll start season 3 next month.
The way you've described your loft it sounds like a fun place to live. Your cat sounds like a few I have owned. I seem to be attracted to bad boy cats, like some women (or some men for that matter) are attracted to dangerous men. If the cat pushes me around, makes a mess I'm expected to clean up , and generally misbehaves its love on sight. Luckily I'm more choosey with my men. I look forward to seeing your Atlantis appearance and wish you luck on your new project.
Your loft sounds crazy!
Sadly I've yet to find a place of my own with crazy flatmates...maybe sometime soon.
As for where Atlantis is shown...sorry...can't help you cos I live across the pond!
Hi Kate,
I've never heard the name Stargatites, but we've been calling ourselves Gaters for years now. This was way back when the biggest stargate site out there was sg-1.net :-D How things have changed, but yeah Gaters are to stargate, what Trekkies are to Star Trek
-Colin
Well, there IS a cat wheel... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5Fg6KFcOsU
Yet another fan... but really, I'm a 'dr. Hew' fan (I think your bro is hilarious) more than a SGA fan. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your stuff too.
:)
Poor Rufus! If he hasn't climbed a tree ever, no wonder he's a fat cat.
I wish me and my roomies were allowed pets.
Also, I'm in Britland so am waaaaaay behind on Stargate, although I thoroughly approve of being referred to as a Stargatite. I shall work on catching up in time to see McKay and Mrs Miller not too long after everyone else :)
Hiya Kate,
I'm actually in the UK, but I'm reliably informed that the place to watch Stargate in Canada is "Spacecast" also known as "Space". It's your only Sci-Fi channel and the first place to air the new episodes.
Your flatmates sound suitably fun and crazy, which is the best way for these things to be. I love sharing houses, and I'm going to be so darn lonely this year (I'm moving into a flat on my own!).
To get your cat to exercise, have you tried using food as an incentive? Maybe tying a little bit of chicken to some string and pulling it along? Food's usually a good incentive for me, so it might work for the kitty!
Lovely to read your blog, and I look forward to reading more!
Tracy Jane
Stargate Atlantis (as well as SG-1) are on both City and Space at least once weekly (SG-1 is a daily fixture on Space). The new Atlantis season premiers on TMN in September, and I so do not have the tv guide memorized, nope, nope, nope.
I love reading about other peoples' horrible pets, as my 4 cats are all possesed and I think my (dozen) rats would eat me if I let them (this is a lie! Rats are truly the best ever pets!) None of my cats have ever walked right into a wall, but the oldest does fall down an aweful lot, he's a rear leg amputee. Watching him try and scratch an ear with his stump is quite possibly the funniest thing ever.
PHARK, eh? I like it! Makes me think of Fark.com, the coolest news website ever. Crazy news + snarky internet commenters = love. (Yes, Fark has a meaning there... it stands in for a similar-sounding 'f' word)
Mad props to you for being able to work with a sibling for so long. I think if I tried to work with my brother, we'd be strangling each other by the end of the day. :P
If David can use "snarcasm" (which is, I have to say, perhaps the best word ever), you can certainly use "Stargatites".
Welcome to the insanity, Kate. =)
I'm very much looking forward to seeing McKay and Mrs. Miller and A Dog's Breakfast (since it's gonna come to Sacramento, right?), and to following your blog. And hearing about Rufus the Obese Cat!
SGA in TO? Well, Space was supposed to be airing it, but I believe they're quite far behind. However! Rumour has it that one can download the episodes via the iTunes Music Store...
(PHARK? It's officially your fault that there is now diet Cherry Pepsi dripping down my monitor screen...)

Hiya Kate,
Wish I could tell you how to upload a photo on here, but I couldn't figure it out either...lol.
Your roomies sound awesome. Your cat sounds like a complete character. I have a cat, she's pushing 15 years now and she pretty much rules the house. My new pup who probably out weighs her by 45 pounds (she's a 8 months old now) is even afraid of her..lol
Stargatites? hmm..I like it. :)
Your roomies sound fabulous.
As far as overweight cats go, I've got one of those (Rikki, which is short for Rikki Tiki Tavi--because he's a snowshoe siamese who looked like a mongoose when he was small) and my solution was to buy him "old cat" cat food. He's got his own brand of stomach trouble, though, so there was a lot of trial and error involved in finding him one that didn't result in unpleasant surprises left around the house for me to find.
Looking forward to the photo, whenever you manage to vanquish the techno-gremlins. *g*
Hey Kate, I'm not sure if anyone's answered this but I live pretty close to Toronto, and you can see Atlantis if you get Rogers Digital Cable. It's on the Movie Network, and should start airing from the beginning of Season 3 fairly soon! I hope that helps :)

Hello, Kate!
Seems everyone has the Atlantis on Canadian TV question answered, so I won't attempt it.
I'm very much looking forward to your episode of Atlantis (it airs here in the US in two weeks!) and "A Dog's Breakfast" when that is released.
www.livejournal.com is far easier to use than blog.
It's free, pictures are easy to post, can add friends and interests in user info.
Anyhoo. Good luck and the loft sounds hilarious as does the tubby tabby :)
Looking forward to seeing you on SGA as Mrs Miller
My cat is also orange and white and named after a singer whose name starts with R. (Ringo Starr.) He is also psychotic and completely awesome.
I love that you have a blog. I love that you did an episode of Atlantis. And I love you, because you're fantastic. I hope to see more of your work soon.
Heh. PHARK is a cool acronym.
I adore my big brother, and he's a computer programmer too. All high-n-mighty about how cool it is being a supervisor, and how much fun it is to whip his koosh balls at the Minions.
If only he could have explosive koosh balls to whip at annoying bosses, hrm? ;)
Hee. I'm a big fan of your brother's work, and I laughed my ass off at the teaser for Dog's Breakfast. You and Paul McGillion have a wonderful on-screen chemistry! Since I'm unfortunately a lame American, I have no idea when I'll be able to see the movie (if ever... remember, America = lame), but I'm looking forward to watching it someday... somehow.
I had a wondrous fat mutant cat named Milady. I say she's a mutant 'cause she's polydactyl (no, not a dinosaur)- 9 toes on the one front paw and about 7 1/2 on the other. She also had an irritable digestive system. Unfortunately, it was so irritable that she required surgery to remove her entire intestines, which we couldn't afford, but the vet was a sweetheart and adopted her from us and gave her the surgery. She's now the vet's in-house cat, and seems to be very happy with her new life.
Still miss her like crazy though. I miss having her play Monster Under The Covers with our feet in bed, and how she'd drape herself over my thighs, pinning me into one position at nigh. The purring alleviates any irritation in me. Yes, I'm easy with animals. ;D
Again, lovely to have discovered your blog, and I hope other fans of your brothers treat you well. Take care!

PS - I'm sure if you ask David, he might be able to get you a copy of your SGA appearance on tape or something... not like he has any clout or anything on the show, right? ;)
You should be able to just post a pic on the same screen as where you post. There's an icon - click it, and it'll let you upload a photo. If it isn't working, maybe the photo is too big or your computer is just acting up.
You can also add a photo for your profile by clicking "edit profile." Of course, I think you have to have a URL for it to link to - just link there from Photobucket (free membership).
It's lovely to see you here in the land of blogging! Hope you enjoy your stay, and my cat says 'hi' to your cat. Or that may just be her hacking up a hairball again, I'm not sure.
-yet another gater/stargateite
Can I just say how much of a fan I am of the Hewlett family? From what I've seen (SGA, ADB, and a play) you're both highly talented. I'm very much looking forward to McKay and Mrs. Miller.
Also, I must say PHARK? Hee!
Not a blogger, sadly, but I am on livejournal (LJ). There's actually a comm where you can download SGA (and SG1) episodes--you have to delete them in 24 hours, of course, but it gives us working stiffs (or those of us not in America) a chance to watch our favorite shows. So there's one way to catch SGA (they're completely up-to-date on the eps).
Finally, Warriors of Terra? Now I'm curious.
reminds me on my flatmates *hehe* I wouldn't want to live without them, it's just all crazy and nice :)
Oh and I guess it maybe inspireing sometimes? I'm living together with a (very godd) singer and an (incredible talented) artist. If I were a good writer they would inspire me a lot^^
uh and don't worry about that tec stuff, you'll figure it out, it isn't that hard if you willing to try :)
and yeah Str atrek Fans have Trekkies/Trekker, Stargate Gater, Star Wars Warsler and firefly fans sometimes Browncoats. But where I am we don't use such definitions. We love too much fandoms that you can't really out it together. For me I started as a Trekkie but I've grown so much in this world that it's not only limited to Sci-Fi but Mystery and Fantasy as well. Can't draw a line there for manny things. and so you can't "limitate" Stargate lovers as only Stargaties/Gaters... but I talk to much again^^ I kno what ya ment, so I should shut up about that ;)
Hey Kate! Looking forward to your episode on Stargate. I have 3 older brothers (and 1 older sister) so I can relate when it comes to the loving relationship between siblings.
I love your cat, he's so cute. I have two myself. Wilson and Rodney. And yes, before asked, named after Rodney McKay. It was just to fitting. He eats to much, he thinks he's always right and tries to push everyone around, drools and snores in his sleep, and is scared of everything. Anyway, here's a picture of the boys! http://faith.goldustlady.info/Munstuff/rodneywilson.jpg
oh, rufus is such a pretty boy!!!i love seeing picture of other ppls kitties :) :) and your pharkhaus sounds fun.
